René Herbst 'Sandows' Chair

One of six 'Sandows' chairs designed by René Herbst in 1928 and produced by Formes Nouvelles from the 1960s onwards. The chair combines a chromed tubular steel frame with individually tensioned black elastic cords, each secured by exposed steel springs along the perimeter of the seat and backrest.
The continuous tubular frame forms both the legs and supporting structure, while the suspended cords provide the seating surface without the use of upholstery or rigid panels. The exposed springs and repeated linear elements emphasize the chair's engineered construction and remain its defining visual feature.
Very good vintage condition. The chromed frames are structurally sound and show light surface scratches, minor scuffs and localised chrome wear consistent with age and use. Two elastic support cords have been replaced, as shown in the photographs. The remaining cords are complete, under tension and show light wear with minor fraying. Slight variations in overall height are present across the chairs, consistent with production tolerances.
