Pair of Italian Modernist cantilever armchairs produced by Plurima, Italy, in the 1970s. Based on the cantilever seating principles developed by Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer in the 1920s, the design combines chrome-plated tubular steel frames with moulded plywood seats and backrests.
The continuous steel tube forms the sled base and armrests in a single visual line, while the gently curved plywood backrest and shaped seat soften the otherwise restrained construction. The combination of bent plywood and exposed tubular steel reflects the functional language of post-war Italian Modernist furniture.
Light wear and scattered marks to the plywood surfaces, including small abrasions and edge wear. Minor scratches and surface wear to the chrome-plated frames consistent with age and use. Plastic glides show use-related wear.
