‘501 Göteborg’ Dining Chairs by Erik Gunnar Asplund for Cassina
1 available
Architectural and quietly refined set of eight '501 Göteborg' dining chairs originally designed by Swedish architect Erik Gunnar Asplund between 1934 and 1937, later produced by Cassina in Italy. Created for the extension of the Göteborg Town Hall, the design reflects Asplund's uniquely human approach to Scandinavian Rationalism - balancing functional clarity with warmth, proportion, and material sensitivity.
Executed in one of the most sought-after finish combinations, featuring Cassina's burgundy leather upholstery.
Minimal silhouette, characterised by the gently curved backrest and elegant linear structure. Subtle references to early bentwood furniture, particularly the Thonet tradition, can be recognised in the restrained construction and timeless proportions.
The Göteborg chair is considered one of Asplund's most important furniture designs, embodying the close relationship between architecture, interiors, and furniture that defined his work. The model remains highly regarded for its understated sophistication and exceptional versatility within both modern and historic interiors.
All chairs retain their original Cassina producer stamps and carved serial numbers.
Overall very good vintage condition with expected signs of age and use. Beautiful consistent patina across the leather with minor wear and surface marks to the wooden frames consistent with careful use over time.
