Designed by Rainer Schell for Schlapp Möbel, these Canto stacking chairs were produced in Germany during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The design combines solid beech frames with moulded plywood seat shells, upholstered seat and back pads, and exposed finger-jointed front corners that reveal the seat construction. The gently curved backrests, rounded cylindrical legs and compact stacking profile demonstrate the robust construction and considered detailing associated with German contract furniture of the period.
Structurally sound and stack correctly. The beech frames show scattered scratches, small dents and areas of finish wear, most noticeably to the legs, upper back posts and seat rails, together with a few localised paint marks and abrasions from use and stacking. The upholstery is well preserved with light, even wear and minor compression consistent with age.
